Gaia at the Old Library

An illuminated artwork called Gaia has been installed in the heart of the Old Library at Trinity College and has fast become one of the top things to see in Dublin.

The installation features NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface, showcasing the planet floating in three dimensions as it might be viewed from space. Perfectly positioned under the Long Room’s barrel vaulted ceiling, Gaia mesmerizes visitors from all angles.

Wow moment

The Long Room, often hailed as one of the world’s most beautiful libraries and affectionately known as “Ireland’s front room,” is a marvel to behold.

Stepping into its grand chamber is an awe-inspiring experience, now made even more striking by the stunning Gaia installation. The luminous image of Earth, suspended against the backdrop of the Long Room’s rich, dark oak ceiling, creates a captivating visual contrast—a breathtaking scene, perfect for sharing on social media.

From the artist

Gaia was created by artist Luke Jerram. When speaking about the installation he said:
“I designed Gaia to prompt the difficult discussions we all need to have about the environment and what we, as individuals and wider society, can do to make our lifestyles more sustainable. And so, it is very fitting that Gaia will be displayed in Trinity College Dublin while the Old Library undergoes this landmark conservation project.”
